Changing My Relationship with Food Changed My Relationship with Myself
“I have done extensive work on changing my mindset and behaviors, striving to be the best version of myself.
My health was deteriorating, and I feared developing chronic illnesses if I didn’t make a change. Desperate and at rock bottom, I knew I had to find a new path forward.
Hello! I’m Janet, a pharmacist from Harrow, UK, and I want to share my journey with you—a journey that has transformed not only my body but my entire outlook on life.
My struggles with weight began in my teenage years. Standing at 5 feet 8 inches with a larger frame, I felt different from the other girls in my class. This insecurity led me to my first diet at age 15. As I entered my twenties, I sought medical help, only to be prescribed amphetamines for weight loss—thankfully, I recognized this wasn’t a healthy solution and opted for a weight loss group instead.
Over the years, I tried countless diets, each one promising results but ultimately leaving me obsessing over food. Although I would lose weight initially, the diets were unsustainable, leading to a cycle of weight loss and gain. My weight continued to climb, reaching nearly 22 stone (over 300 pounds), and I wore size 24 clothes. The heavier I got, the more I hid behind my weight, feeling like it was a shield. I was overwhelmed by the thought of losing such a significant amount of weight and felt it was an impossible feat.
By the end of 2012, I was at my lowest. I hated how I looked and felt, and with the onset of menopause approaching, I knew that losing weight would become increasingly difficult. My health was deteriorating, and I feared developing chronic illnesses if I didn’t make a change. Desperate and at rock bottom, I knew I had to find a new path forward.
I had encountered Pete Cohen’s work before and realized that the issue wasn’t just about dieting but about my mindset and behaviors towards food. I needed to shift my thinking and approach to eating and exercise. It was time for a fundamental change. I attended one of Pete’s workshops and was inspired by the success stories of others. This gave me hope and the belief that weight loss was possible for me too. I also found a personal trainer who had been trained by Pete, which provided additional support.
In April 2013, I made a pivotal change. I stopped relying on processed and sugary foods and began preparing healthy meals. I incorporated regular exercise into my life for the first time, shifting my focus from dieting to overall health and fitness.
Since then, I have lost nearly 8 stone (almost 100 pounds). In 2013 alone, I shed 6 stone, and more importantly, I have maintained that loss while continuing to gradually lose more weight. I’ve gone from wearing size 24 clothes to fitting into size 16, with a goal to reach size 14. I am confident that I will achieve this goal.
Today, I am healthier, fitter, and more self-confident than ever before. I love wearing clothes that fit and flatter my body, and I feel comfortable in my own skin. The core of my success has been Pete’s approach to weight loss, which emphasizes developing a healthy relationship with food and adopting sustainable habits rather than relying on quick fixes. I have done extensive work on changing my mindset and behaviors, striving to be the best version of myself.
Support has been crucial throughout my journey. I used to think I had to go it alone, but I’ve discovered that surrounding myself with positive, like-minded people is essential. The Weight Loss Challenge group has been a tremendous source of inspiration for me, and now I am proud to provide that same inspiration and hope to others.
If I can make these changes and achieve my goals, I believe you can too. Remember, transforming your relationship with food can transform your relationship with yourself.
